Letting things be messy

– an inadvertent introduction to me!

2–3 minutes

One of my new years resolutions was to be tidier, but as I have continued into 2026 with just as much clutter and a floor-drobe that deserves some recognition for its consistency, it is safe to say this goal is something I am still yet to work on. But I think there is a reason why this seemingly simple resolution has not led to results. My messiness is not merely laziness – it is part of my personality.

Now I’m not justifying leaving my belongings scattered around and I will continue to work on this, but I have a generally messy mindset. I like doing things spontaneously and imperfectly, I enjoy a creative process that doesn’t run smoothly from start to end and above all else I want nothing more than to be busy, chaotic and messy. It keeps not only others, but also myself, guessing!

imperfect

chaotic

busy

messy

These words have negative connotations for many. Take the definition of imperfect, ‘faulty or incomplete’ with some of its synonyms being faulty, flawed, inferior, blemished, torn, broken, cracked. All words that paint a sub-standard picture, but shine a different light on it and these synonyms remind me of a unique Japanese art form called Kintsugi.

Through the process of repairing ceramic pots with gold lines to emphasise the previous damage, it allows people to understand their story visually, with no two the same.

This is much the same idea as visual mending which is a technique that I studied at A level and something I look forward delving deeper into over the coming months so stay tuned for some imperfect creations!

The next few months are leading up to two big milestones of mine – running the London Marathon as well as departing for 3 months of travel (which I will go into more depth about soon), so busy is a very relevant word for me to use at the moment. But I will be updating this page regularly to document my successes and achievements, but also when things don’t quite go to plan – just like the cracks in the pottery, let’s keep it real!

So with my first post complete, you are reading it here and now that whilst the events I write about may be messy and disorganised, the writing will not be. And in the spirit of introductions, I will leave you for now with the word that best describes me inside and out;
